RN to BSN Requirements in Utah
RN Licensure: Online RN to BSN degrees are classified as “post-licensure” programs. Utah universities will expect you to have—or be in the process of earning—an RN license. Some schools will allow you to apply for an Online RN to BSN before you have passed the NCLEX exam. Read the admissions section & talk to the RN to BSN program coordinator if you’re in this situation.
- Do you have questions about state licensure? Visit the Utah State Board of Nursing website.
- The Board also publishes recent NCLEX pass rates for UT BSN degrees in its Resources section. These stats won’t apply to post-licensure programs, but we like to use them as a quality marker. Avoid any school with consistently low pass rates!
State Authorization: Are you an RN living outside of Utah? It looks like most UT universities will be happy to accept you into their Online RN to BSN programs—we didn’t see a lot of issues with state authorization and distance learning regulations. However, it never hurts to double-check that you can apply.
Utah Online RN to BSN Programs: FAQs
Are 100% Online RN to BSN Programs in Utah Available?
Yes! You’ll find 100% Online RN to BSN programs at a number of regionally accredited Utah schools. UVU even offers a choice—you can complete its Online RN to BSN in a 100% online, hybrid, or face-to-face format. There are exceptions to the rule. For example, if you live near Weber State University, you might want to look into its ACEN-accredited Hybrid RN to BSN. This will bring you to campus five times per semester.
Can I Choose a Utah Online RN to BSN Program with “No Clinicals”?
Because of CCNE and ACEN accreditation regulations, Online RN to BSN degrees always include practicums. However, these “clinicals” won’t be like bedside clinicals in your associate degree or diploma program. Instead, they’ll focus on fieldwork experiences. For instance:
- U of U’s Online RN to BS contains 45 clinical hours partnered with a nurse leader and a 68-hour clinical practicum leading to a durable quality improvement project.
- UVU’s Online RN to BSN features a Nursing in the Community Clinical that requires 45 hours of community service (e.g. working in a community-based nursing setting, engaging in a community teaching project, providing community service, etc.).
- WGU’s Online RN to BSN includes a 90-hour Field Experience; some of these hours will be fulfilled through community assessments, simulations, and other activities.
Do I Need Statistics to Apply for Utah Online RN to BSN Programs?
Probably. We saw it listed as a standard prerequisite for many Utah programs. If you don’t have statistics on your transcript, talk to the RN to BSN program coordinator. You may be able to substitute a similar mathematics course. Or you may be able to take it as a “co-requisite” during your RN to BSN degree.
Are There Any Online RN to BSN to MSN Programs in Utah?
Yes. WGU’s Online RN to MSN programs in Nursing Informatics, Education, and Leadership and Management include a BSN as part of the curriculum. The entire pathway might take ~42 months/3.5 years to complete.
WGU is regionally accredited and CCNE-accredited, but it is known to be competency-based. Talk to your mentors and employer before you make a decision. There are other options from brick & mortar schools out there—see the online degrees in our directory of RN to BSN to MSN Programs for ideas.
