One word of caution—be sure you’re eligible to apply! Because of state authorization & distance learning regulations, some Online RN to BSN programs still cannot accept applicants from specific states. Talk to the RN to BSN program coordinator if you can’t find this information on the program website.
Methodology
Our Online RN to BSN Most Affordable Rankings are different to other nursing sites. Those sites will often use generic tuition data and fuzzy credit estimates. But here’s the kicker—Online RN to BSN programs often include a lot of mandatory fees. Once you factor in those numbers, costs can start to shoot up. So we went looking for the real-world price!
- Accreditation: All U.S. colleges & universities in our Cheapest Online RN to BSN rankings had to be: 1) CCNE-accredited; 2) regionally accredited; and 3) non-profit. If you’re interested in affordable ACEN-accredited options, check out our state rankings.
- Online Tuition Rates: We researched per credit tuition numbers & mandatory credit minimums on all the Online RN to BSN Programs in our database. If the Online RN to BSN was classified as a distance learning program, we used the university’s online tuition rate. If the RN to BSN programs had a special tuition rate, we used that price.
- Full-Time vs. Part-Time: A number of public universities in our rankings charge by the semester. So we made the decision to base our tuition estimates on full-time study (e.g. 2-3 semesters). If you’re thinking of part-time study at public schools, the price will often go up. Costs should stay the same at private universities and public schools with fixed per credit tuition rates.
- Hidden Fees: We dug into the fine print to find hidden costs such as mandatory per credit fees (e.g. distance learning), per semester fees (e.g. technology), and more. We included all of these in our price estimates. You’ll find an explanation of our calculations in the description.
- One-Off Costs: However, we didn’t include one-off costs, since these can vary from student to student. Most universities will charge a small amount for one-time fees (e.g. $20 for the application fee). Other common costs include books & supplies, CPR certification, a criminal background check, drug screening, and the like.
- Total Estimated Price: Our estimates are based on the latest tuition & fee schedules, but these will go up each year. That means the total price should be taken as a ballpark figure. Having said that, schools in this list have been affordable from year to year.
- In-State vs. Out-of-State: A number of Online RN to BSN Programs in our rankings are only offered to RNs with an in-state license. If the program was unavailable to RNs in other states, we’ve flagged the out-of-state tuition rate as “No Out-of-State RNs.” However, if the program was under $7,500 for out-of-state students, we’ve given it a “Yes” for affordability.
Our rankings have remained pretty consistent over the past few years. You’ll still notice a lot of Florida, California, and UNC System schools in our list—they offer extremely affordable in-state tuition prices to residents. Within the top 28 schools, only six universities & colleges raised their Online RN to BSN prices from 2024-2025.

WCU’s Online RN to BSN hits our #1 Cheapest spot thanks to the NC Promise Tuition Plan. NC Promise reduces student costs at three UNC system campuses. That means per credit tuition for NC residents is superb and required per credit fees are minimal. Even the out-of-state price is eminently reasonable!
A few things to note: WCU’s $2,800 estimate for the entire Online RN to BSN includes one-off costs (e.g. graduation fee) and books & supplies. Have a look at the helpful Cost Breakdown. When you’re examining tuition, keep in mind that you’ll be paying the distance learning rate and mandatory fees for online programs. We included all of those fees in our estimated prices.

How Cheap is FSU’s Online RN to BSN?
You’ll find online costs listed under FSU’s Undergraduate, Distance Education section. To come up with our prices, we used a full-time plan of study—12 credits in first semester, 12 credits in the second semester, and 8 credits to finish. We’ve also included the mandatory, per course Proctor Fee, using the Online RN to BSN curriculum of 10 courses.
For the out-of-state price, we used the Outside NC tuition rates. These apply to students who are: non-residents of North Carolina for tuition purposes, living outside of North Carolina, and registered in an online program. How Cheap is UF’s Online RN to BSN?
UF’s Online RN to BSN is an incredible deal for Florida residents! But it’s not so great for out-of-state candidates. That’s because a) the out-of-state price is high; and b) all RN to BSN students at UF must have an active, unencumbered Florida RN license or enhanced licensure through the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) by the spring term deadline.
If you’re lucky enough to live in Florida, you’re looking at one of the cheapest Online RN to BSN programs in the country. UF Online tuition rates and mandatory fees are ridiculously low. The Optional Fee Package is only worth it if you live in the Gainesville area and want access to on-campus student services.

How Cheap is FGC’s Online RN to BSN?
FGC charges different tuition & fees for lower division and upper division courses in the baccalaureate. The Online RN-BSN is an upper division program, so we went with that rate. The result? Florida residents pay a super-low price for the Online RN-BSN. Because FGC wants to see documentation of a current Florida RN License, this is a program for in-state students. We should also note that you’ll be responsible for lab fees and textbook costs. Budget for around $5,125 in total.

If you’re enrolling in MDC’s Online RN to BSN program, you’re looking at around 30 credits. So in-state tuition rates are going to be very reasonable! The RN to BSN is only open to RNs with a Florida license, which means out-of-state rates won’t apply.
MDC’s Fee Per Credit Hour chart for Baccalaureate Programs covers tuition and all mandatory fees, but it doesn’t include the per credit Distance Learning Fee. So we made sure to factor that into the total estimated price. Additional one-off costs might include your BSN application fee and course fees. If you live outside of Miami, it’s also important to note that clinical sites for practicums are located in Miami-Dade County.

The only reason EFSC’s super-affordable Online RN to BSN isn’t ranked higher in this list is due to credits—the core curriculum has 34 credits, which is a little more than some of the other Florida programs. On the other hand, it allows you to choose 2 electives. So that extra bit of tuition might be worth it.
This is an RN to BSN for RNs with an active & unencumbered Florida license; out-of-state nurses will need to look elsewhere. When you’re putting together your budget, examine the Fee Schedule. There are additional one-time costs for Nursing & Health Sciences programs (e.g. health program liability insurance) and the usual fees.
EFSC Nursing Scholarships & Financial Aid

GSW bills its Online RN-BSN as “totally online.” Labs are virtual & clinical hours are community-based. Out-of-state tuition doesn’t apply because only nurses with a Georgia RN license are eligible for the program.

GSW is part of the University System of Georgia, which means that it has deeper pockets than smaller public schools. The Office of Student Financial Aid has a huge section on funding options. PHSC’s Online RN to BSN is another steal for Floridians. If you have a current Florida RN license, you’ll be able to apply for this affordable and fully online program. Bear in mind that it contains 42 credits taken part- or full-time, so it may take a little longer than some other options in our list. However, students with all of their general education classes met can complete the BSN in just three semesters.
PHSC provides a Breakdown of Costs on the program page. In addition to tuition & fees, you’ll be on the hook for a one-time application fee, lab fees, and—possibly—additional course fees. That’s likely to bring the total price up by at least $750, if not more.

How Cheap is BC’s Online RN to BSN?
BC’s Online RN-BSN is aimed at Florida residents who can afford a few trips to the Miramar West Center. Lecture classes are available online, but there may be on-campus components for courses such as the Advanced Health Assessment Lab & electives—talk to the program coordinator to confirm details. This is also a rare RN to BSN program that offers an online course in ethics.
If you do live in the Fort Lauderdale/Miramar/Miami triangle, tuition rates are pretty sweet. Just be aware that BC has a separate online rate for junior & senior level baccalaureate courses. We calculated the price using 39 credits because the RN-BSN curriculum contains 33 credit hours of nursing courses and 6 credits of electives. See the Program Map under Health Sciences for details.

Florida affordability strikes again! UCF charges different in-state and out-of-state tuition rates for its Online RN to BSN. The in-state rate is excellent; the out-of-state rate is over $20,000. And it’s only available to RNs who live in a Compact State.
You’ll be looking at paying the current UCF Online – Undergraduate rate. This per credit number includes tuition & mandatory fees (e.g. distance learning). But it omits on-campus fees that don’t apply (e.g. athletic fee). There may be additional one-off costs (e.g. ID Service & Access).
UCF Nursing Scholarships & Financial Aid
The College of Nursing has built a large section that’s dedicated to Nursing Scholarships & Aid. RN to BSN students can apply for scholarships through UCF’s general Scholarships A20 database. You can also consult the list of external scholarship opportunities and visit the Office of Financial Aid. UCF offers a Payment Plan, but it’s designed to split tuition into 2 payments, rather than in monthly installments.

Pfeiffer’s Online RN to BSN degree completion program is offered at a special tuition rate. Although the coursework is only 26 semester hours, we used the mandatory credit minimum (30 semester hours) for our calculations.
Typically, students take 4 courses in the fall and spring, and 2 courses in the summer. You’ll also need to budget for one-off fees (e.g. graduation fee), but these are mild.
Pfeiffer Nursing Scholarships & Financial Aid
Pfeiffer is a private university in North Carolina that’s affiliated with the United Methodist Church. The Department of Nursing isn’t very large, so you may want to ask about the university’s general scholarships. Veterans are eligible for specialized tuition assistance, but the RN to BSN does not qualify for the Partnership Program discount.

WSSU is part of the UNC System, so its Online RN to BSN is cheap for in-state candidates. However, unlike other UNC schools, it only accepts applicants with an unrestricted and active North Carolina RN license. That means out-of-state RNs will need to look elsewhere.
To come up with the in-state price, we looked at the full-time Distance Learning tuition rate (3 semesters of work). In addition to tuition, online students pay for mandatory educational & technology and ASG fees, so we included those in the total cost. There may be one-time fees (e.g. application fee)—check with the RN to BSN program coordinator.
WSSU Nursing Scholarships & Financial Aid
The best place to start for funding info is WSSU’s section on Undergraduate Financial Aid. This has details on loans, grants, military benefits, and awards. As we mentioned, WSSU is a UNC school. That means permanent, full-time employees in the UNC Health Care system can apply for UNC Tuition Waivers.
There isn’t much in the way of internal scholarships, but WSSU provides a list of External Scholarship sources. North Carolina residents are also eligible for the CFNC’s Forgivable Education Loan for Service (FELS) Program and scholarships from the North Carolina Foundation for Nursing (NCFN).

Florida RNs should put UNF on their list of schools to consider. In addition to being a solid academic program, the Online RN-BSN Bridge Track is offered at a highly affordable tuition rate that’s under $6,000 for in-state residents. UNF will accept RNs from any state, but costs are much higher for out-of-state RNs.
We’ve included all the mandatory fees in our price quote, including the distance learning fee. You’ll also need to budget for additional one-off fees and course materials—ask the program coordinator for a list. UNF charges per credit hour, so costs will be the same whether you choose to study full-time or part-time.

The total price for UNCC’s Online RN to BSN is excellent for North Carolina residents, but much higher for out-of-state students. UNCC is willing to consider any candidate with a current, unencumbered RN license.

Are 6-Month Online RN to BSN Programs Available (and Affordable)?
Yes. 6-month Online RN to BSN programs are available if you choose a self-paced, competency-based program like UWM’s Flexible Option or Western Governors University (WGU). Have a look at our rankings of the Fastest Online RN to BSN programs to view all of your options. On a 6-month schedule, a number of these programs will be under $7,500.
However, 6 months can be a punishing schedule for an RN to BSN program. It means you will have to cram ~5 courses into a 3-month period and ~10 courses into a 6-month period. If you’re studying online, you may have additional family & work responsibilities.
It can be done! One RN who finished WGU’s program in 4 months worked nights and had a supportive partner who helped a lot with wrangling their older kids. But it will require thoughtful planning.

Will Earning an Online RN to BSN Help Me Earn a Higher Salary?
In general, the answer is “yes.” In our section on Return on Investment (ROI), you’ll find strategies for sourcing real-world salary numbers for RNs with a BSN.
However, salaries are going to come down to a) what position you’re working in; b) your employer; and c) your state. Take a look at the BLS wage & employment maps for RNs to see what we mean. For example:
- If you’re a BSN-holder working as an ICU nurse in a hospital in California, you’re going to be earning a lot more than a BSN-holder in the same position in Nebraska.
- If you’re an RN in Nevada with 10+ years of experience on the floor, you may be able to argue for a strong salary and a leadership role, regardless of your educational qualifications. However, in New York, you’d eventually need to earn a BSN due to the BSN in 10 Law.
Talk to your supervisor and recent BSN alumni to get a sense of the market. Remember, too, that you have the option to consider an RN to MSN pathway.
Can I Continue Working While Earning an Online RN to BSN?
Absolutely. All of the online programs in our affordable rankings are designed for working RNs. They often feature multiple start dates throughout the year, shortened course times (e.g. 5 weeks), and asynchronous, “learn on your own time” formats. You’ll usually be able to complete any clinicals & practicums in your own community.
What About Affordable Online RN to BSN Programs from ACEN-Accredited Schools?
You’ll notice that our affordable rankings feature Online RN to BSN programs from CCNE-accredited Schools of Nursing. But keep in mind that you can also consider Online RN to BSN programs from ACEN-accredited schools within your state.
- ACEN-accredited Online RN to BSN programs are often cheap for in-state RNs and expensive for out-of-state RNs. You’ll see this phenomenon occurring in states like Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina.
- So we chose to stick to CCNE. For example, if we had included all the affordable ACEN-accredited options in Florida, our rankings would have been clogged with programs that were only cheap for residents of the Sunshine State.
